Runner Rugs: Format, Proportion, and Where They Work
A runner rug is defined by its proportions as much as its length. The standard runner is 2 to 3 feet wide, a format that suits most residential corridors and leaves 4 to 6 inches of floor visible on each side — enough to frame the rug without making the floor look bare. At that width, a well-chosen runner becomes the most concentrated design statement in the house: a single strip of pattern or color that runs the full length of a hallway and defines the space entirely on its own terms.
Jubi's runner collection spans geometric, organic, and sculptural designs — from the graphic repeat of the Octagon Link Hand-Knotted Wool Runner and the bold linearity of the Zig Zag Hand-Tufted Wool Runner to the fluid silhouette of the Sculpted Edge Hand-Tufted Wool Runner and the architectural geometry of the Desert Matrix Hand-Knotted Wool Runner. All are handwoven in premium New Zealand wool by master artisans in Bhadohi, India.
Sizing a Runner for Your Space
Length is the primary decision. For a standard residential hallway, 8 to 10 feet covers most of the corridor comfortably. Longer corridors — gallery halls, open staircases, extended entry passages — are served by 12 to 15 feet and beyond. Every Jubi runner is available in custom lengths, which means the runner fits the corridor rather than the corridor accommodating whatever lengths happen to be in stock. For staircase runners, the length is calculated from the base of the lowest riser to the top of the highest tread; contact the studio for staircase-specific guidance.
Width follows the space. Most hallways suit a 2.5-foot runner with floor visible on both sides. Wider corridors take a 3-foot runner naturally. The rug size guide covers runner placement in detail across every room type.
Runner Constructions
Hand-knotted runners are the most durable option for high-traffic corridors — the dense, individually tied pile holds up to sustained foot traffic better than any other construction. The Contour Edge Hand-Tufted Wool Runner and Golden Geometry Hand-Tufted Wool Runner represent the hand-tufted range, with plush pile and strong design clarity. The Temple Steps Hand-Tufted Wool Runner demonstrates how geometric pattern reads particularly well in the narrow linear format. Shop all wool runners or browse by length.
