Shades of brown and tan form a checkered grid, each square filled with stacked horizontal lines that shift in density. The alternating blocks give the surface variation while keeping the geometry precise. Hand-knotted in wool, it turns a simple checkerboard into a patterned field with texture and character.

Construction: Hand-knotted

Material: 100% New Zealand wool

Dimensions: Standard sizes available online, with fully custom sizes on request

Pile Height: 0.5"

Origin: Handmade in Bhadohi, India — a region renowned for fine carpet weaving

New Zealand wool is naturally stain-resistant and springs back underfoot — footprints and furniture marks lift rather than settling in. It also takes dye deeply, which is what gives the colors their depth. Some initial shedding is normal and settles within the first few weeks. Why New Zealand wool →

Care: Shedding is normal and will lessen with use. Vacuum regularly on a high-pile setting. Clip loose ends with scissors (do not pull). Rotate periodically for even wear. Blot spills immediately with a clean, white cloth (do not rub). Professional cleaning recommended.

See our rug care guide for more tips.

Shipping: Knotted rugs are handmade to order and typically ship within 5–6 weeks. Once dispatched, delivery takes 3–5 business days via DHL Express. We offer complimentary worldwide shipping on all rugs.

Returns: Rugs may be returned within 15 days of delivery with a 15% restocking fee. Custom rugs are final sale, except in cases of shipping damage. Read our return policy for full details.

What Makes a Checkered Rug Work in a Room

A checkered rug brings order to a floor, and the version of that idea matters. Brown Tan Checkered Grid stays in a warm, earthy register, alternating tan and dark brown rather than reaching for high contrast, so the grid feels architectural without turning stark. That makes it forgiving underfoot: the two tones and the small ladder-like dashes inside each square absorb everyday wear and read as texture rather than as a single flat field. It sits comfortably under wood and leather, and it gives a plainer room a sense of structure.

Hand-knotting is the reason the small detail survives. Each knot is tied by hand and packed dense, building a fine, firm, low pile that holds the dashes inside every square cleanly, a level of intricacy a coarser construction would blur. That density is also what makes a knotted rug heirloom-grade and slow to show age.
