The Hand-Knotted Shag

The same tide sunk into a deep hand-knotted shag, the pile rising and settling like surf until the rug behaves like a soft tidal landscape underfoot. Every rug is knotted row by row, and the pile stands deep enough that you read the contours with your feet before your eyes.

Hand-Tufted, Carved in Relief

The contour lines are carved into a dense tufted pile, each ridge rising and falling in soft relief that catches shadow as you cross the room. Crisp enough to read as a drawing, soft enough to live on.

The Sketchbook

Behind The Design

A tide going out leaves a line in the sand wherever the water last held. Another forms below it, then another, and by the time the water is gone the beach carries a set of nested lines, each one marking a level: a contour map the sea drew itself, and erased on the way back in.

Rolling Tides keeps that survey. The bands sit inside one another the way elevation does on a map, and the tones step with them, five to a colorway, so the surface is read by height rather than by pattern.

What the map does not get is a frame. There is no straight edge anywhere for the form to settle against, so the outline is decided by where the lines happen to close. Carving finishes it: each band is sheared to sit slightly above the one beside it, so the relief shifts as the light crosses the floor through the day.

Design Your Rug

Both makings of Rolling Tides are customizable: recolor the wave, set your size and shape, and see the rug before it's woven. Hand-tufted in 2–3 weeks, hand-knotted shag in 5–6.
