More Shapes

The Bold Grid Boxstep is a plaid wool rug that scales the pattern up: fewer, larger squares stretch across a wide field, so the grid becomes the room's architecture rather than a fine all-over texture. Each big square is still outlined in a fine double line, one stitched run beside one solid run, drawn a few shades lighter than the ground so the geometry stays legible without hard contrast. The flat, low pile keeps the broad lines clean and the grid grounded underfoot. If you want the same square at a tighter scale, the Boxstep Fine Grid sets the squares smaller and closer, reading as all-over texture rather than architecture. Designed in New York and hand-knotted in Bhadohi, India, it is made from durable New Zealand wool with a 0.5 inch pile that holds each line knot by knot. Made to order in any size, including oversized, and any of over 1,200 wool colors. Each piece is ready in 5 to 6 weeks and ships free worldwide, duties included.

Construction: Hand-knotted

Material: 100% New Zealand wool

Dimensions: Standard sizes available online, with fully custom sizes on request

Pile Height: 0.5"

Origin: Handmade in Bhadohi, India — a region renowned for fine carpet weaving

New Zealand wool is naturally stain-resistant and springs back underfoot — footprints and furniture marks lift rather than settling in. It also takes dye deeply, which is what gives the colors their depth. Some initial shedding is normal and settles within the first few weeks. Why New Zealand wool →

Care: Shedding is normal and will lessen with use. Vacuum regularly on a high-pile setting. Clip loose ends with scissors (do not pull). Rotate periodically for even wear. Blot spills immediately with a clean, white cloth (do not rub). Professional cleaning recommended.

See our rug care guide for more tips.

Shipping: Knotted rugs are handmade to order and typically ship within 5–6 weeks. Once dispatched, delivery takes 3–5 business days via DHL Express. We offer complimentary worldwide shipping on all rugs.

Returns: Rugs may be returned within 15 days of delivery with a 15% restocking fee. Custom rugs are final sale, except in cases of shipping damage. Read our return policy for full details.

The Sketchbook

Behind The Design

A simple square, repeated with discipline, can settle a whole room. Boxstep takes that idea and runs a steady grid across the floor, each square outlined in a fine double line: one stitched run set beside one solid run, so the edges read crisp without ever feeling sharp.

The Craft

Made the Long Way

Your rug doesn’t exist yet. It starts when you order: master artisans spin the wool, dye it to your color, then knot it by hand, row by row.

Sizing a Bold Grid Plaid Rug for a Room

A large-scale plaid rug like the Bold Grid Boxstep reads best when it has room to stretch. Because the squares are big and the footprint wide, the grid wants to sit under a full furniture group, so the pattern resolves across the open floor rather than getting cut off at the edges. In a living room, run it past the front legs of the sofa and the side chairs so the seating sits together on one plane; in a dining room, size it so the chairs stay on the rug when pulled out, and the big squares frame the table cleanly. The larger scale also suits open spaces with high ceilings, where a fine pattern could disappear but a bold one holds its own. The chocolate brown and cream palette keeps the bigger pattern calm rather than heavy, so the rug grounds the room without dominating it. Hand-knotting makes the scale possible: each knot is tied by hand, holding the fine double lines crisp even across the bigger squares, with a firm low pile that wears for years.
