The Sculpted Edge Rug brings a softness you can feel from across the room with an undulating form that reshapes the way a space breathes. Its plush New Zealand wool surface and cloud-like silhouette create a gentle, calming presence whether styled in a minimalist living room or a cozy bedroom retreat.
Inspiration Behind the Design
The scalloped perimeter was the spark and everything else grew from that single gesture. I became fascinated with the idea that a rug’s edge could be the primary design language rather than a finishing line we simply accept. So many natural forms—petals, clouds, hills—end in soft, rounded shapes. Why were rugs still bound to rectangles?
Designing a rug where the edge is the design unlocked something new. These sculptural, cloud-like curves create the sense that the piece is gently floating, as if cut from a much larger, softer form. The horizontal waves were developed later as an internal echo of that silhouette. They aren’t waves in the literal sense; they’re softened bands that mirror the perimeter’s rhythm on a smaller scale. This repetition creates a cohesive surface that feels calm, welcoming, and deeply tactile.
Design Development
Perfecting the edge became an obsession. Each scallop needed to feel intentional, neither pinched nor floppy. We created more than fifteen edge samples before landing on a proportion that felt both generous and balanced. The depth of each curve, the spacing between them, and the way they transition around corners, all of it had to feel as though the rug grew naturally into this form.
Inside the rug, the pattern also shifted throughout development. Early concepts explored geometric stripes and more rigid bands, but they clashed with the softness of the outer edge. The interior needed to extend the cloud-like philosophy, not undermine it. The gentle, irregular curves we ultimately chose create a conversation between the edge and center. Your eye travels from the scalloped perimeter inward with no visual interruption.
Craft and Process
Each Sculpted Edge Rug begins in our workshop in Bhadohi, India – one of the world’s most renowned regions for handmade rugs. Our team of artisans is trained across every rug-making technique, many of them carrying skills passed through their families for generations. From dyeing the wool to preparing the canvas to carving each curve, the rug is crafted entirely by hand.
Hand-tufting was essential for this design. The technique enables us to shape the scalloped perimeter by hand. Each curve is individually formed, trimmed, and carefully serged to protect the rug’s silhouette. The entire process takes about 3 weeks from start to finish before the rug is ready to ship.
Color and Texture
The pile is intentionally plush, with carved channels that create gentle rises and dips across the surface. New Zealand wool gives the rug its soft, cushioned feel underfoot while holding enough structure for the pattern to read clearly rather than collapse.
The color palette stays muted and mineral-toned—sage, soft blue, dusty lavender, warm clay—so the form leads the design. Light catches along the carved lines during the day, deepening shadows in brighter rooms and softening them as the light shifts. The effect is quiet but dimensional, adding depth without visual noise.
Styling the Rug
This rug softens hard spaces instantly. In modern or minimalist interiors, where lines tend to be crisp and architectural, the scalloped border introduces a natural counterbalance that makes the room feel more lived-in and warm.
As a living-room centerpiece, the rug shines when its edges have space to breathe. Under a glass or open-frame coffee table, the sculptural silhouette becomes part of the composition rather than something hidden. The 8x10 size is especially striking in these settings.
In bedrooms, reading nooks, or nurseries, the cloud-like shape brings a sense of gentleness and retreat. The plush wool pile adds warmth underfoot, making these spaces feel cocooned and intimate.
The only rule: don’t hide the edges. Even allowing one or two scalloped sides to peek out transforms the room. The shape is the statement, let it be seen.
