Wavy and Scalloped Rugs: When the Edge Is the Design
A standard rug has four straight edges. The design lives in the middle — in the pattern, the color, the pile. A wavy or scalloped rug works differently: the edge itself is part of the design, and the silhouette of the rug against the floor becomes as important as anything woven into its surface. The soft, repeating curve of a scalloped edge changes the entire character of a rug — it reads as organic, handcrafted, and considered in a way that a rectangle with the same pattern would not.
Producing a shaped edge in pile construction is genuinely difficult. The scallop or wave must be cut cleanly after tufting, the edge must be finished in a way that won't unravel, and the curve must be consistent across the perimeter without pulling or distorting the pile. It's craft work that requires skill, and it's one of the details that reveals the quality of handwoven construction.
