A runner is a problem-solver. Hallways, kitchen galleys, and the strips of floor beside a bed are too narrow for an area rug, and a runner fills them exactly, adding warmth underfoot and drawing a line down the length of the space. The key is the proportion: leave a few inches of bare floor on each side so the runner frames the path cleanly, and choose a length that runs most of the corridor rather than stopping short. A solid color keeps a long shape calm and uninterrupted, and a grounding tone like rust gives a passage warmth without the distraction of pattern.
Hand-tufting makes the strip soft and durable for a high-traffic route. Artisans in Bhadohi set New Zealand wool through a stretched canvas by hand and shear it level, building an even pile that wears well down a hallway.
