Multicolor wool area rugs in stripe, check, geometric, and organic patterns — pieces where the palette is part of the design, handwoven in premium New Zealand wool by master artisans in Bhadohi, India. Multicolor Area Rugs: Let the Floor Source the Palette

The conventional approach to decorating with color is to choose a wall color first, then find furniture and accessories that coordinate with it. A multicolor rug inverts that logic — and produces better rooms for it. When the floor carries multiple colors in a cohesive design, those colors become the palette source for everything above it: the upholstery pulls from the rug's warm tones, the cushions echo one of the rug's accent colors, the artwork responds to the palette that the rug has already established. The rug doesn't need to match the room. The room organizes itself around the rug.

This approach works specifically because a handwoven wool rug in a multi-color palette has already solved the design problem of color proportion and color harmony.
