Material and Make

New Zealand wool, dyed to your palette.

Hand-tufted rugs are made by working yarn through a stretched canvas, then shearing and sculpting the pile by hand. The result is a dense, soft surface with clean edges to every shape, and the freedom to carve texture into the design.

Deepwater Checkered is hand-tufted to order in Jubi’s Bhadohi studio. Its 100% New Zealand wool is dyed to the palette you choose, then the finished rug is bound and checked by hand before it ships.

Proportion and Margin: Placing a Checkered Rug in the Room

A checkered rug with a border is already a composition of margins: the squares, the frame, and the floor around the frame. Get the last one right and the first two look intended. In a living room, leave roughly 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the border and the walls, so the frame reads as a frame rather than carpet stopped short. Under a dining table, size the rug so chairs stay on it when pulled out, usually about 24 inches beyond the table.

Because Deepwater Checkered keeps its border width at any dimension, the frame is a fixed margin you can plan with. A hallway runner shows mostly border and a single file of checks; a 10 by 14 shows a broad field inside the same frame. Keep the border sides and ends in one color for a classic frame, or set them apart with custom colors so the rug reads as a woven tray.

Hand-tufting in our Bhadohi studio gives the squares their crisp seam. New Zealand wool is set through a backing by hand and sheared level, so two tones meet edge to edge and the mitred corner stays sharp.
