Fitting a Checkered Runner to a Hallway
A checkered runner earns its keep in the long, narrow spaces a standard rug cannot serve: hallways, galley kitchens, the floor along the foot of a bed. The trick is leaving an even margin of floor on either side, usually a few inches of bare boards framing the runner, so the path looks deliberate rather than wall to wall. Length should stop short of the room's ends rather than running fully into a doorway, which keeps the line clean. With raised tonal squares, this runner adds texture and a marching rhythm to a passage that would otherwise read as dead space, all in a soft cream that stays easy underfoot.
Hand-tufting gives the runner its depth. Artisans in Bhadohi set New Zealand wool through a backing by hand, then carve and shear the surface so each square stands in gentle relief, letting the grid read through light along the whole run.
