Placing a Checkered Runner in a Hallway or Kitchen
A checkered runner earns its keep in the narrow spaces a standard rug ignores. In a hallway, leave a few inches of floor on each side so the strip looks intentional rather than wall-to-wall, and let the oversized black and ivory squares carry the eye the length of the run. In a galley kitchen, a runner softens a hard floor underfoot at the counter, the high-contrast grid reading as a graphic anchor against cabinets and tile. At the foot of a bed or along a bench, it adds a confident line without crowding the room. The trick is length: a runner should stop a foot or so short of the end of the run so the floor frames it, and the oversized squares are forgiving here, since the grid stays legible whether the strip is short or stretches the full corridor.
Hand-tufting suits a runner because it stands up to repeated traffic. Artisans in Bhadohi set New Zealand wool by hand and shear the pile so each square stays crisp down the length of the strip, cushioned but durable. See more in our Runner Rugs collection, or explore Checkered Rugs for the full pattern. Every Jubi rug is made to order, so the runner can be woven to the exact length your space needs.
