How a Scalloped Rug Shapes a Room
A scalloped rug works on a room differently from a straight-edged one. Instead of drawing hard lines into the floor, the rounded lobes soften the footprint, easing the transition between rug and floor and pairing naturally with curved furniture, rattan, and low modern seating. In a deep burnt terracotta, the effect is doubly calming: the warm earthen tone settles the space while the sculpted border keeps it from feeling heavy or formal. Float it under a coffee table so the scallops read on every side, set it at a bedside where the curved edge spills past the frame, or use it to warm a reading nook or entry.
Hand-tufting is what makes the edge possible. Working from the back of a stretched canvas, artisans in Bhadohi set New Zealand wool through the foundation by hand, then shear and carve the surface so each scallop holds a clean, rounded line. That precise shaping is hard to achieve in a flat weave, which is why the technique suits a form built on its outline. Explore more warm tones in our Orange Rugs collection.
