Material and Make

New Zealand wool, dyed to your palette.

Each knot is tied by hand around the warp, one at a time, then trimmed level. It is the slowest way to make a rug and the most durable: fine detail, a dense pile, and a rug built to outlast the room it was made for.

Boxstep is hand-knotted to order in Jubi’s Bhadohi studio. Its 100% New Zealand wool is dyed to the palette you choose, then the finished rug is bound and checked by hand before it ships.

Choosing the Grid Scale for a Custom Plaid Rug

A plaid rug drawn from one repeated square gives you a decision most patterns do not: how big the square should be. In the Jubi Customizer, Boxstep sets its grid by the number of boxes running across the rug. Fewer boxes mean larger squares that read as architecture under a full furniture group; more boxes mean a tighter, calmer field closer to a traditional plaid. Enter your dimensions first, then step the count up or down and watch the squares resize to fit, the rows following the length, so the grid stays whole whether the rug is a hallway runner, a square for a reading corner, or a wide living room rectangle. Palette is the second decision. The ground and the lines each take their own wool, so custom colors can bring the lines close to the field for a soft grid or set them well apart for a graphic one. Hand-knotting carries the fine double line at any scale: artisans in Bhadohi tie each knot by hand, and the firm 0.5 inch pile keeps the lines crisp for years. See the wider family in our Plaid Rugs and Hand-Knotted Rugs collections, or browse every design in Custom Rugs. Every Jubi rug is made to order, so Boxstep can be knotted to the exact size and colors your room calls for.
