Jubi’s original palette for this design. Every wool in it can be changed above.

Wool dyed to order for each palette

Material and Make

New Zealand wool, dyed to your palette.

Hand-tufted rugs are made by working yarn through a stretched canvas, then shearing and sculpting the pile by hand. The result is a dense, soft surface with clean edges to every shape, and the freedom to carve texture into the design.

Large Checkered is hand-tufted to order in Jubi’s Bhadohi studio. Its 100% New Zealand wool is dyed to the palette you choose, then the finished rug is bound and checked by hand before it ships.

Pattern Scale in a Checkered Rug: What Grows and What Holds

Scale is the whole idea of Large Checkered. The square does not change when the rug does: enter a bigger footprint in the Jubi Customizer and the design answers with more squares, not larger ones, so the check reads the same from the doorway whether the rug sits under a coffee table or runs nearly wall to wall. What changes is the count, and with it the feel: a small rug might show five squares across and read as a bold panel, while a large one shows twice that and settles into a floor. Where the rug meets a sofa or a bed, the check gives the eye a measure of the room, which is why a large grid makes a small space feel ordered rather than smaller.

In our Bhadohi studio the design is hand-tufted, each square set through the backing by hand and sheared level, so the line between the tones is clean at any size. Custom colors for the two checks change the mood more than the scale: two close tones read as texture, a pale square against a dark one as graphic.
