Four equal sides in a warm grey-brown: a taupe square shag rug sits somewhere between mushroom and driftwood, picking up warmth from timber and coolness from stone, and the long pile lets it pass through several shades of that tone as light crosses the room. The shape echoes the lines of a room without adding a color to it, so the floor reads composed and the rest of the room is free to do the talking. Designed in New York and hand-knotted in Bhadohi, India, it is made from 100% New Zealand wool with a 1.5 inch pile that feels dense and plush underfoot and takes the hard edge off footsteps and voices. Made to order in any size, a taupe square can be matched to the proportions of a square room, centered under a coffee table, or set on the floor beside a bed. Production takes 5 to 6 weeks, and shipping is free worldwide, duties included.

Construction: Hand-knotted shag

Material: 100% New Zealand wool

Dimensions: Standard sizes available online, with fully custom sizes on request

Pile Height: 1"

Origin: Handmade in Bhadohi, India — a region renowned for fine carpet weaving

New Zealand wool is naturally stain-resistant and springs back underfoot — footprints and furniture marks lift rather than settling in. It also takes dye deeply, which is what gives the colors their depth. Some initial shedding is normal and settles within the first few weeks. Why New Zealand wool →

Care: Shedding is normal and will lessen with use. Vacuum regularly on a high-pile setting. Clip loose ends with scissors (do not pull). Rotate periodically for even wear. Blot spills immediately with a clean, white cloth (do not rub). Professional cleaning recommended.

See our rug care guide for more tips.

Our Picks for You

Sizing a Taupe Square Shag Rug for a Square Room

When the room itself is square, the shapes echo each other, so the floor border reads evenly and the room feels composed. The main decision is how large to go.

Measure the room and allow roughly 12 to 18 inches of bare floor on each side. That keeps a consistent band framing the rug and stops the square from running under baseboards or against a radiator. In a living space, choose a size that lets the front legs of every sofa and chair rest on the pile. In a bedroom, a larger square can extend past the sides and foot of the bed, so you step onto wool whichever way you get up.

Taupe is a sensible base for a room still taking shape. It carries enough warmth for leather, rattan and oak and enough grey for concrete, steel and white walls, so it keeps working as the furniture changes. Its depth comes from hand-knotting in Bhadohi, one knot at a time, with the wool left long. Browse Square Rugs, Neutral Rugs and Brown Rugs. The margin can be exactly the width you planned, since every taupe square is made to order.
