High-pile wool is carved into sweeping ridges, giving the irregular silhouette a sculptural depth unique to shag construction. Each rise and recess emphasizes the organic form, creating a surface that shifts with light and shadow. In brown, tan, or custom colors, the design takes on a bold, tactile presence.

Construction: Hand-knotted shag

Material: 100% New Zealand wool

Dimensions: Standard sizes available online, with fully custom sizes on request

Pile Height: 1"

Origin: Handmade in Bhadohi, India — a region renowned for fine carpet weaving

New Zealand wool is naturally stain-resistant and springs back underfoot — footprints and furniture marks lift rather than settling in. It also takes dye deeply, which is what gives the colors their depth. Some initial shedding is normal and settles within the first few weeks. Why New Zealand wool →

Care: Shedding is normal and will lessen with use. Vacuum regularly on a high-pile setting. Clip loose ends with scissors (do not pull). Rotate periodically for even wear. Blot spills immediately with a clean, white cloth (do not rub). Professional cleaning recommended.

See our rug care guide for more tips.

Styling an Abstract Rug With a Deep Shag Surface

An abstract rug like Rolling Tides works on movement rather than corners. Because the outline curves and the ridges spread in concentric loops, it pulls the eye toward flow, softening a room with hard architecture and pairing naturally with rounded furniture and low, modern seating. In a deep shag, that effect intensifies: the long pile gives the tidal bands real volume, so the warm rust and terracotta form reads as much through touch as through sight. Float it under a coffee table where bare feet meet it daily, or set it at a bedside so the plush edge spills past the frame.

The shag construction is what gives the surface its depth. Working knot by knot, artisans in Bhadohi tie New Zealand wool at an extended pile height, building a long, soft, cushioned surface that a flat weave cannot hold, which is why the technique suits a design built on rolling movement.
