Warm caramel-tan and deep brown-black squares set out an even checkerboard, and then this checkered wool rug complicates it, filling every square with rows of tiny ladder-like dashes so the surface reads as a clean grid from a distance and as fine, woven detail up close. The two earthy tones trade places square by square, giving the pattern a steady cadence that grounds a room rather than crowds it. Designed in New York and hand-knotted in Bhadohi, India, it is made from 100% New Zealand wool with a 0.5 inch pile, a dense, fine, durable surface that holds the small dashes sharply. Hand-knotting is what keeps that intricate detail crisp across the whole grid. Made to order in any size, including oversized, so the checkerboard can be scaled to your exact room without losing its rhythm. Each piece is ready in 6 to 7 weeks and ships free worldwide, duties included.

Construction: Hand-knotted

Material: 100% New Zealand wool

Dimensions: Standard sizes available online, with fully custom sizes on request

Pile Height: 0.5"

Origin: Handmade in Bhadohi, India — a region renowned for fine carpet weaving

New Zealand wool is naturally stain-resistant and springs back underfoot — footprints and furniture marks lift rather than settling in. It also takes dye deeply, which is what gives the colors their depth. Some initial shedding is normal and settles within the first few weeks. Why New Zealand wool →

Care: Shedding is normal and will lessen with use. Vacuum regularly on a high-pile setting. Clip loose ends with scissors (do not pull). Rotate periodically for even wear. Blot spills immediately with a clean, white cloth (do not rub). Professional cleaning recommended.

See our rug care guide for more tips.

Shipping: Knotted rugs are handmade to order and typically ship within 6–7 weeks. Once dispatched, delivery takes 3–5 business days via DHL Express. We offer complimentary worldwide shipping on all rugs.

Returns: Rugs may be returned within 15 days of delivery with a 15% restocking fee. Custom rugs are final sale, except in cases of shipping damage. Read our return policy for full details.

Brown and Tan Checkered Rug

I am very much enjoying my new Jubi rug. I think it took a little longer than the projected lead time on their website, but for being a 100% wool, hand made rug, patience is needed. The rug itself is fairly thick and plush, and feels great under foot. The tassels are nicely knotted, and it generally feels pretty well made. There are a couple long threads that need some snipping, and only time will tell how well it holds up to our two cats. It has been shedding (which is fairly standard with a new, wool rug). The one caveat is that the rug is very differently colored than the product photos. The photo of the rug really just shows a dark brown pattern with various tan colors in between. The actual rug is charcoal (not dark brown) with tan, orange, and pink between. As an interior designer, I know first hand how tough rugs can be in color selection. I do think the website needs to have a better representation of the colors in the rug (and possible colors in the rug) and some context photos and close up photos of their rugs. Because of this I have waffled between 3 and 4 stars, but ultimately I want more fun rugs in this world, and appreciate the unique nature of Jubi's designs.

Thank you for your thoughtful review, Kelly! We’re so glad you’re enjoying your rug and appreciate your patience with the handmade process. Shedding and a few long threads are totally normal with new wool rugs, but we’re happy to provide care tips if needed!

We truly appreciate your feedback about color representation. While we work hard to capture accurate photos, we know that colors can sometimes appear differently in different lighting or screens. Your insights are super helpful as we continue refining our images to better reflect each rug’s unique tones.

Your support for fun, unique rugs means the world to us! If there’s anything we can do to make your experience even better, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

What Makes a Checkered Rug Work in a Room

A checkered rug brings order to a floor, and the version of that idea matters. Brown Tan Checkered Grid stays in a warm, earthy register, alternating tan and dark brown rather than reaching for high contrast, so the grid feels architectural without turning stark. That makes it forgiving underfoot: the two tones and the small ladder-like dashes inside each square absorb everyday wear and read as texture rather than as a single flat field. It sits comfortably under wood and leather, and it gives a plainer room a sense of structure.

Hand-knotting is the reason the small detail survives. Each knot is tied by hand and packed dense, building a fine, firm, low pile that holds the dashes inside every square cleanly, a level of intricacy a coarser construction would blur. That density is also what makes a hand-knotted rug heirloom-grade and slow to show age.
