How Jubi Rugs Are Made — Handwoven to Order in Bhadohi

Every Jubi rug is made the long way — drawn, spun, dyed, woven, carved, and finished by hand, one rug at a time. And most of it is decided before the loom is ever threaded: the geometry, the wool, the exact color of every strand.

Every rug starts in our New York studio — sketches, proportions, and color studies refined until the design earns its wool. Custom commissions begin the same way: your space, your palette, drawn into a rendering you approve before a single strand is dyed.

Raw Wool

Hand-Spun

Raw New Zealand fleece — long-staple, lanolin-rich — is spun into yarn by hand on a traditional wheel, the way Bhadohi has spun it for four centuries. The wheel gives the yarn its character: a soft, living irregularity you can read in the finished pile.

Color

Dyed to Order

Color is the last decision made before the loom — and the one we take furthest. Each rug's wool is dyed individually to order in small batches, drawn from a library of more than 1,200 wool colors, then dried in skeins before it ever meets the loom.

Woven by Hand

In Bhadohi — the handwoven-carpet capital of the world for over four centuries — the design finally meets the loom. Master artisans build each rug a row at a time: knotted on the vertical loom, tufted through stretched canvas, or woven flat on the horizontal loom. Every technique is its own discipline, and every rug passes through a single pair of expert hands, hour after hour, for weeks.

The Finish

Carved & Finished

After weaving, the pile is sheared, carved, and embossed entirely by hand — the sculpted dimension that makes a Jubi unmistakable underfoot. Then each rug is washed and sun-dried, its edges hand-bound, and every inch inspected before it is approved to carry the name.
