Material and Make

New Zealand wool, dyed to your palette.

Hand-tufted rugs are made by working yarn through a stretched canvas, then shearing and sculpting the pile by hand. The result is a dense, soft surface with clean edges to every shape, and the freedom to carve texture into the design.

Bark is hand-tufted to order in Jubi’s Bhadohi studio. Its 100% New Zealand wool is dyed to the palette you choose, then the finished rug is bound and checked by hand before it ships.

Measuring a Room for an Abstract Rug, Down to the Inch

Bark rewards an exact measurement because its lines run in one direction. Decide first which way they should travel: along the length of a living room so the drawing leads toward the window, or across a bedroom so the seams run with the bed. Then measure the floor they will cover and enter those numbers in the Jubi Customizer. An inch matters here: a line that stops just short of a doorway reads as intention, and one that runs under a threshold reads as chance.

On a large floor the ground does most of the work and the lines keep it from reading as a blank, while on a narrow rug three or four seams are enough to give it direction. The palette is two decisions: the ground, which sets the room's base tone, and the line, which can match the floorboards, the frame of a sofa, or a trim color, and custom colors let both follow the room.

Hand-tufting keeps the drawing fine. In our Bhadohi studio each line is set through the backing by hand in New Zealand wool and sheared flush with the ground, so it stays a line at any length.
