Wool dyed to order for each palette

Material and Make

New Zealand wool, dyed to your palette.

Warp and weft are interlaced by hand with no pile at all. The result is flat, crisp and light: a rug that sits close to the floor, wears well in busy rooms, and is easy to move and turn.

Checkered Flatweave is hand-woven to order in Jubi’s Bhadohi studio. Its 100% New Zealand wool is dyed to the palette you choose, then the finished rug is bound and checked by hand before it ships.

Proportion and Margin: How Much Floor to Leave Around a Checkered Rug

A fine checkered rug behaves like a floor within the floor, so the margin around it matters more than it would for a looser pattern. Too little and the grid reads as carpet that stopped short; too much and it floats. A common working rule is a band of bare floor of 12 to 18 inches on each side, wider in a large room and tighter in a hall. Under a dining table, measure the table and add about 24 inches on every side so the chairs stay on the check when pulled out. Because Checkered is made to your dimensions in the Jubi Customizer, those margins can be exact rather than whatever the nearest standard size allows.

Hand-weaving gives this design its precision. In our Bhadohi studio the pattern is woven flat into the structure of the rug itself, warp and weft, with no deep pile to blur the line, so each small square meets the next with a clean edge. Custom colors for the two checks let the grid sit close to the floor in two near tones or lift off it in contrast.
