Material and Make

New Zealand wool, dyed to your palette.

Hand-tufted rugs are made by working yarn through a stretched canvas, then shearing and sculpting the pile by hand. The result is a dense, soft surface with clean edges to every shape, and the freedom to carve texture into the design.

Colorful Checkered is hand-tufted to order in Jubi’s Bhadohi studio. Its 100% New Zealand wool is dyed to the palette you choose, then the finished rug is bound and checked by hand before it ships.

Pattern Scale in a Checkered Rug: What Grows and What Holds

A checkered rug changes character with its size more than most patterns do. Colorful Checkered holds its square at one size, so a small rug shows a few dozen squares and reads as a bright block of color, while a large one shows many more and reads as a field, the eye resting on the whole rather than on any single square. In a bedroom a 5 by 8 at the foot of the bed keeps the pattern legible; in an open living room a 9 by 12 settles into something closer to a woven floor.

What holds is the rhythm: seven wools rotating so no two neighbors match, whatever the dimensions. Choose custom colors for each of the seven in the Jubi Customizer, or keep the Colorful starting palette and let the squares do the work. Lighter pastels pull the grid forward; a run of deeper tones lets it recede under furniture.

Hand-tufting suits a check this soft. In our Bhadohi studio the wool is set through the backing by hand and sheared level, so each square meets the next as a soft edge rather than a hard line, which is what keeps the color warm.
