Wool dyed to order for each palette

Material and Make

New Zealand wool, dyed to your palette.

Hand-tufted rugs are made by working yarn through a stretched canvas, then shearing and sculpting the pile by hand. The result is a dense, soft surface with clean edges to every shape, and the freedom to carve texture into the design.

Small Checkered is hand-tufted to order in Jubi’s Bhadohi studio. Its 100% New Zealand wool is dyed to the palette you choose, then the finished rug is bound and checked by hand before it ships.

Placing a Checkered Rug Around the Furniture

A grid asks to be lined up with something. The checks of Small Checkered are small enough that the rug need not be centred on the room, but it rewards being squared to the furniture: set the long edge parallel to the sofa and a full row of checks shows in front of it instead of a sliver. Under a dining table, size the rug so the chairs stay on the pattern when pulled out, and let a whole check, not a half, meet the table legs. Because every square stays the same size at any dimension, you can plan this to the inch in the Jubi Customizer.

Keep the two tones close for a floor that reads as texture from across the room, or widen the gap for a sharper board; custom colors for both checks are chosen in the same place as the size. A small check is forgiving under a coffee table: whatever it hides, the rhythm continues on either side.

In our Bhadohi studio the design is hand-tufted, the wool set through the backing by hand and sheared level, which keeps the edge of every check crisp. Small Checkered sits with the other Checkered Rugs and among our Customizable Rugs, each one made to the dimensions you enter.
