Wool dyed to order for each palette

Material and Make

New Zealand wool, dyed to your palette.

Hand-tufted rugs are made by working yarn through a stretched canvas, then shearing and sculpting the pile by hand. The result is a dense, soft surface with clean edges to every shape, and the freedom to carve texture into the design.

Soft Checkered is hand-tufted to order in Jubi’s Bhadohi studio. Its 100% New Zealand wool is dyed to the palette you choose, then the finished rug is bound and checked by hand before it ships.

Choosing a Shape for a Custom Checkered Rug

A grid is easy to picture at a new size and hard to get right at a new outline, which is why Soft Checkered is worth specifying in the Jubi Customizer. The Customizer builds this design in seven shapes, and the courses re-flow for each one. In a rectangle or square they run clean to the edge. In a runner the same squares line up down the length like tiles along a hall, so the pattern suits a corridor instead of looking cropped. Round and oval outlines meet the grid at a curve, and the design responds to that edge; an arch or a corner shape does the same where the outline turns. Enter your dimensions to the inch and see the check settle before you order.

Color is a single decision, because the wool is the only layer. Keep Soft Cream and the carved seams do the work, or choose a deeper tone from the custom colors and the relief reads stronger.

Hand-tufting makes the relief possible: New Zealand wool is set through a taut foundation by hand, then carved along every seam so each square stands slightly proud.
