Material and Make

New Zealand wool, dyed to your palette.

Hand-tufted rugs are made by working yarn through a stretched canvas, then shearing and sculpting the pile by hand. The result is a dense, soft surface with clean edges to every shape, and the freedom to carve texture into the design.

Soft Olive Checkered is hand-tufted to order in Jubi’s Bhadohi studio. Its 100% New Zealand wool is dyed to the palette you choose, then the finished rug is bound and checked by hand before it ships.

Setting the Tone of a Checkered Rug in the Jubi Customizer

A checkered rug is defined by the distance between its two colors, and Soft Olive Checkered keeps that distance short. In the Jubi Customizer each tone in the grid is a separate layer, so you decide how close the greens sit. Keep the sage and olive a shade apart and the rug stays a soft, tonal field that grounds a room without drawing the eye. Open the gap a little and the check begins to show, still calm but more deliberate. The same grid can move into custom colors entirely, a warm stone and clay, say.

Size and shape work the same way. Enter the floor's dimensions to the inch and the grid recounts itself, adding squares rather than enlarging them, so a wide living room and a narrow hall carry tiles of the same scale. Choose rectangle, round, oval, square, or runner, and the squares meet each outline cleanly, stepping in soft arcs on a round.

Hand-tufting carries the result: New Zealand wool set through a backing by hand, then carved so each square sits in slight relief. See the pattern across our Checkered Rugs, or the formats in Round Rugs and Runner Rugs. Every Jubi rug is made to order, so Soft Olive Checkered is tufted to the size, shape, and palette you set.
