Wool dyed to order for each palette

Material and Make

New Zealand wool, dyed to your palette.

Hand-tufted rugs are made by working yarn through a stretched canvas, then shearing and sculpting the pile by hand. The result is a dense, soft surface with clean edges to every shape, and the freedom to carve texture into the design.

Staircase is hand-tufted to order in Jubi’s Bhadohi studio. Its 100% New Zealand wool is dyed to the palette you choose, then the finished rug is bound and checked by hand before it ships.

Choosing Custom Colors for a Mid Century Modern Rug

A mid century modern rug depends on contrast, and Staircase makes that contrast a two-part decision. In the Jubi Customizer the ground and the bars each take their own wool, so the same stepped cascade can read two ways. A close pairing, such as a soft gray ground under charcoal bars, lets the steps surface slowly, while a bright ground under a dark bar, as in the Pink starting colorway, turns every riser into a hard graphic edge. The era's own palette is a reliable guide: mustard, olive, teak brown, and off-white sit naturally beside walnut furniture and low seating.

Shape changes the read as much as color. In a Runner the bars stack into a long descent that leads down a hall, while in a Round or Oval the curved outline frames the center of the cascade. Because the design responds as you adjust it, the bars re-space, and you can preview the result before ordering.

Hand-tufting holds those crisp horizontals. Artisans in Bhadohi set New Zealand wool through a backing by hand and shear the pile so each bar sits sharp against the ground.
