Material and Make

New Zealand wool, dyed to your palette.

Hand-tufted rugs are made by working yarn through a stretched canvas, then shearing and sculpting the pile by hand. The result is a dense, soft surface with clean edges to every shape, and the freedom to carve texture into the design.

Stitched and Striped is hand-tufted to order in Jubi’s Bhadohi studio. Its 100% New Zealand wool is dyed to the palette you choose, then the finished rug is bound and checked by hand before it ships.

Proportion and Margin: Sizing a Striped Rug to the Room

A horizontal stripe asks for a little more floor around it than a plain rug does. Stitched Stripe's wide wavy bands run across the width, so the rug reads as a landscape set into the floor, and the margin of bare board around it is the frame that makes it read that way. As a rule, leave 12 to 18 inches between the rug's edge and the walls of a bedroom or sitting room; in a dining room, size the rug so chairs stay on the wool when pulled out, about 24 inches beyond the table on every side.

Because the design is made to the inch in the Jubi Customizer, you can set those margins exactly rather than rounding to the nearest stock size. Decide the margin first, measure the floor, and subtract. Custom colors for the bands let you tune the horizon to the room, cooler for a bright space, deeper for an evening one.

In our Bhadohi studio, hand-tufting gives the bands their softness: wool set through the backing by hand and sheared level, so one color blurs into the next. See more in Striped Rugs and the full set of Customizable Rugs. Every Stitched Stripe is tufted to the dimensions you enter.
