Wool dyed to order for each palette

Material and Make

New Zealand wool, dyed to your palette.

Hand-tufted rugs are made by working yarn through a stretched canvas, then shearing and sculpting the pile by hand. The result is a dense, soft surface with clean edges to every shape, and the freedom to carve texture into the design.

Tile is hand-tufted to order in Jubi’s Bhadohi studio. Its 100% New Zealand wool is dyed to the palette you choose, then the finished rug is bound and checked by hand before it ships.

Coloring a Tile Rug, Layer by Layer

Tile has two layers, and the relationship between them is the whole design. The tile is the larger surface, so it sets the room's color; the grid is thin but continuous, so it sets the mood. Begin with the tile. Choose it as you would a floor, against the wall color and wood tones already in the room. Then decide how much the grid should speak.

A grid a shade deeper than the tile reads as texture, closer to plaster relief than pattern, and suits a bedroom or a calm living room. A grid in a dark contrasting color turns the rug into a drawn plan of itself, crisp and architectural, and holds its own in an entry or a kitchen. Clay is the starting colorway in the Jubi Customizer, and custom colors for each layer come from the 55 online wools.

Hand-tufting in our Bhadohi studio gives the grout its depth. New Zealand wool is set through a backing by hand, then sheared and carved so each square stands in relief above a sunken line, a surface a flat weave cannot produce. See Square Rugs and Round Rugs for the shapes the grid takes, or the full range of Customizable Rugs. Each Tile is tufted to the dimensions you enter.
