Wool dyed to order for each palette

Material and Make

New Zealand wool, dyed to your palette.

Hand-tufted rugs are made by working yarn through a stretched canvas, then shearing and sculpting the pile by hand. The result is a dense, soft surface with clean edges to every shape, and the freedom to carve texture into the design.

Tonal Checkered is hand-tufted to order in Jubi’s Bhadohi studio. Its 100% New Zealand wool is dyed to the palette you choose, then the finished rug is bound and checked by hand before it ships.

Color for a Checkered Rug in Your Room: Light, Floor, Walls

Because Tonal Checkered works in values rather than contrast, the room decides how much of it you see. In a bright, north-facing space the steps between squares stay distinct all day, and a palette drawn from the wall color will read as a textured version of the wall. In a darker room with warm lamps the lightest squares carry the pattern after dusk, so give them a little more lift. Against a pale oak floor, start the ladder from the floor's own tone and step darker; on a dark stained floor, do the reverse, so the rug lifts away from the boards instead of sinking into them.

Hand-tufting in our Bhadohi studio keeps the surface even across every square. New Zealand wool is set through the backing by hand and sheared to one height, so the eye reads nothing but the color shift from check to check. That evenness is what lets near values stay quiet rather than turn muddy.

Tonal Checkered is part of our Checkered Rugs, and in the Customizable Rugs collection you choose its custom colors, exact dimensions, and shape, including round. Each rug is tufted to the measurements you enter.
