Hand-tufted rugs are made by working yarn through a stretched canvas, then shearing and sculpting the pile by hand. The result is a dense, soft surface with clean edges to every shape, and the freedom to carve texture into the design.

Watercolor Checkered is hand-tufted to order in Jubi’s Bhadohi studio. Its 100% New Zealand wool is dyed to the palette you choose, then the finished rug is bound and checked by hand before it ships.

Choosing a Palette for a Colorful Rug, Check by Check

A colorful rug asks one question first: which colors, and how many. Watercolor Checkered answers it in layers. In the Jubi Customizer the design is split into a ground and seven check layers, and the Watercolor starting colorway scatters dusty blue, navy, lavender, plum, mauve, sage green, and warm taupe across cream. Keep that spread and the rug reads painterly and easygoing. Narrow it, say three blues and a taupe on the same cream, and the checker turns calmer and more tonal without losing its loosened structure. Darken the ground and the pale squares become the color that lifts. Because the squares are muted washes rather than saturated blocks, custom colors drawn from the 55 online wools tend to stay in balance, and the studio can match beyond them from more than 3,000.

Size and shape work the same way. Enter dimensions to the inch, or choose a round, oval, square, or runner, and the checks re-flow across the new outline so each square keeps its proportion.
