Material and Make

New Zealand wool, dyed to your palette.

Hand-tufted rugs are made by working yarn through a stretched canvas, then shearing and sculpting the pile by hand. The result is a dense, soft surface with clean edges to every shape, and the freedom to carve texture into the design.

Zen Garden is hand-tufted to order in Jubi’s Bhadohi studio. Its 100% New Zealand wool is dyed to the palette you choose, then the finished rug is bound and checked by hand before it ships.

Choosing a Scalloped Rug's Color for the Light, Floor, and Walls

Because Zen Garden carries one color, the choice is about the room rather than the rug. Start with the light. A north-facing room cools every wool a step, so a warmer tone keeps the rings reading as carved rather than flat; a bright south room can take Sage or something cooler without going cold. Then look at the floor. On pale boards the rug wants to sit a shade darker than the wood or its outline disappears; on dark walnut a lighter wool lets the scalloped edge show. The walls set the last limit: hold the rug within a tone or two of them and the rings become the room's texture, or step well away and the rug becomes its center.

Hand-tufting is what makes the relief possible. In our Bhadohi studio the wool is set through the backing by hand and sheared, then the rings are carved into the pile, so the pattern lives in depth and shadow rather than in a second color. That is also why custom colors work so simply here: one wool, chosen once, and the design carries it.

Zen Garden is built for Square Rugs and Runner Rugs as well as rectangles and ovals, and sits among the designs in Customizable Rugs. Each is made to order, carved to the dimensions you enter.
