Rugs by Room

Every room has different demands. Find the right rug for how you use your space.

Choosing the Right Rug for Your Room

Size and placement matter more than most people think. A living room rug should be large enough that your main furniture sits on it or at least has front legs on it. Bedroom rugs work best extending beyond the sides and foot of the bed. Dining rugs need at least two feet beyond the table on all sides so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. When in doubt, go bigger. See our size guide for room-by-room recommendations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size rug do I need for my living room?

Your rug should be large enough that your main seating has at least front legs on it. For most living rooms, an 8'x10' or 9'x12' works well. A rug that's too small will make the room feel disjointed.

How do I place a rug under my bed?

The rug should extend at least 18 to 24 inches beyond the sides and foot of the bed. You want to step onto the rug when you get out of bed on either side. A common approach is placing a large rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed.

How big should a rug be under a dining table?

Add at least two feet to each side of the table. For a 4'x6' table, you need a minimum 8'x10' rug. Chairs should remain fully on the rug when pulled out, otherwise the rug becomes a tripping hazard.

Are wool rugs durable enough for high traffic areas?

Yes. Wool is naturally resilient and bounces back from foot traffic. It also resists staining better than most fibers. Entryways, hallways, and living rooms are all well suited for wool rugs.

What rug works best for a kids room or nursery?

Wool is naturally hypoallergenic, flame resistant, and easy to clean. It's one of the best fiber choices for kids' spaces. Choose a pattern and color that can grow with the child rather than something they'll outgrow in a year.

Can I use a rug in a home office?

Absolutely. A rug under your desk and chair absorbs sound, adds warmth, and defines the workspace visually. Choose a low pile or flatweave for easy chair rolling, or add a chair mat on top of a thicker rug.
