Gridline Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

Strong, graphic, and undeniably modern, the Gridline Rug brings structure into a space without feeling rigid. Its hand-drawn grid pulses with energy, making it as much a piece of design as it is a foundation for living.

Inspiration Behind the Design

A simple grid became the starting point — then deliberately distorted. The Gridline Rug was born from a fascination with repetition that resists perfection, lines that bend just enough to feel alive. I wanted this piece to hold a room with strength. Its pattern doesn’t fade into the background; it asserts itself, designed to be a centerpiece rather than decoration.

Design Development

Early versions leaned too heavily toward precision, closer to graph paper than art. During sampling, we allowed the lines to shift, wobble, and stretch — that freedom gave the rug its energy. The scale of the grid was tested over and over until it landed in a proportion that felt balanced yet dynamic across all sizes, from a 5x8 area rug to a statement-making 9x12. Subtle details complete the design: black lines recessed slightly from the green field for a relief effect, a smooth even pile that holds crisp edges, and hand-finished fringe that underscores its handcrafted origin.

Craft and Process

Each rug begins in our studio in Bhadohi, India, often called the rug capital of the world. Our team of artisans — many from families who have passed down weaving traditions for generations — handle every step of production. The wool is dyed, the loom prepared, and the piece is hand-knotted from start to finish, ensuring clarity in the pattern and strength in the pile. The design is scaled precisely so its character remains intact whether created as a runner, square, or oversized 10x14 rug. From dyeing to finishing, the process takes about 2–3 weeks before it’s on its way to you.

Color and Texture

Weight and permanence guided the choice of hand-knotting. The dense construction gives the rug substance, more like furniture than textile, while keeping the black lines crisp against the field. Green was chosen for its versatility — a tone that shifts with the light, reading soft and muted in some spaces, richer and more saturated in others. Paired with black, the result is bold yet understated, a modern color combination that feels grounded and timeless.

Styling the Rug

As a living room centerpiece, the Gridline Rug sets a framework for everything else in the space. The grid anchors modern furniture, plays against organic silhouettes, and adds structure to eclectic or coastal interiors. Its architectural feel makes it just as at home in a design-forward office or studio. Whether paired with earthy textures or bold contemporary pieces, it provides a clear foundation while leaving room for personal expression.
