Zen Garden Hand-Tufted Wool Rug

The Zen Garden Rug was created as a foundation for calm, dimensional interiors. Its hand-carved surface in sage green adds depth and structure without overwhelming a space.

Inspiration Behind the Design

The Zen Garden Rug was born from the calm repetition and balance found in traditional Japanese gardens. The carved concentric lines echo the raked sand patterns that symbolize flowing water, while the softened rectangular form nods to the controlled geometry of stones and pathways. Each element of the design was created with the intention to capture a meditative rhythm and translate it into a tactile, everyday object that brings structure and serenity into the home.

Craft and Process

Each Zen Garden Rug is hand-tufted and hand-carved by our artisans in Bhadohi, India – the rug capital of the world. Tufting allows us to layer the wool into a plush cut pile, which is then carefully sculpted into the concentric ridges that define this design. The carving process is essential, giving the rug dimension and relief that goes far beyond a flat surface.

Our process begins with dyeing New Zealand wool to achieve the precise shade, preparing the loom, and handcrafting the rug from start to finish. Many of our artisans come from families who have been weaving rugs for generations, and their skill shows in the precision of every line and curve. The design can be scaled to any size – from a 5x8 to oversized 12x15 rugs – while still maintaining its integrity. The full production process takes about 2–3 weeks before your rug is ready to ship.

Color and Texture

The Zen Garden Rug in sage green was chosen for its ability to feel both natural and architectural. The hue references the calm tones of stone, moss, and sand, grounding the design in nature while keeping a distinctly modern edge. This muted green functions as a soft neutral, pairing easily with wood tones, whites, and darker accents, while also bringing a quiet freshness into the room.

The texture is what truly defines this rug. A high-low carving technique creates sculptural relief, almost architectural in its depth. The central field is smooth and refined, bordered by deeply carved ridges that build rhythm and movement around the edges. Light shifts across the surface throughout the day, revealing new subtleties as shadows catch the carved lines. Made from hand-tufted New Zealand wool, the rug is not only luxurious underfoot but also durable enough for everyday living.

Styling the Rug

The Zen Garden Rug was designed with versatility in mind. In a living room, it grounds a seating arrangement with its structured rhythm, allowing furniture to rest comfortably on its surface without obscuring the design. In a bedroom, placed at the foot of a bed, its softness enhances the restful quality of the space while adding a sculptural foundation. It also suits meditative or creative corners, where minimal furniture lets the rug’s form speak for itself. Whether styled in modern, Japandi, or organic-inspired interiors, it functions as both a functional anchor and a statement piece of art.
