Material and Make

New Zealand wool, dyed to your palette.

Hand-tufted rugs are made by working yarn through a stretched canvas, then shearing and sculpting the pile by hand. The result is a dense, soft surface with clean edges to every shape, and the freedom to carve texture into the design.

Fronda is hand-tufted to order in Jubi’s Bhadohi studio. Its 100% New Zealand wool is dyed to the palette you choose, then the finished rug is bound and checked by hand before it ships.

Where a Floral Rug Should Land Around the Furniture

A rug with a repeat can be cut off by a sofa without much loss. A rug that is one single image cannot, and Fronda is one leaf. Under a coffee table the spine runs the length of the seating and the veins fan out beneath the table's edge, the most complete view of the design. At a bedside, set the leaf so the spine aligns with the bed and the far scalloped edge stays open to the room. Keep heavy bases off the tip and the stem, the two points that tell the eye it is a leaf.

Size follows from that decision. Measure the furniture group the leaf should hold, then enter the frond's length and width in the Jubi Customizer and choose the palette, with custom colors for the leaf and the veins, close in tone for a surface that reads as texture or far apart for a graphic one.

Hand-tufting makes the veins legible underfoot. In our Bhadohi studio the New Zealand wool is set through the backing by hand, then sheared and carved so each vein sits as its own line within the pile, and the scalloped edge is cut to follow them.
