As a runner, Boxstep is a plaid rug that stretches its grid into a single long band, squares stepping down the length in a steady, even cadence that suits a narrow run of floor. Each square is outlined in a fine double line, one stitched run beside one solid run in pale cream, against a deep chocolate brown ground with soft plum undertones, all on a flat, low pile. The format is made for the spaces a rectangle cannot reach: entries, landings, and the long path through a kitchen. Designed in New York and hand-knotted in Bhadohi, India, it is made from durable New Zealand wool with a 0.5 inch pile that holds the grid knot by knot. This runner is is made to order in any length and any of over 1,200 wool colors. Each runner is ready in 5 to 6 weeks and ships free worldwide, duties included.

Construction: Hand-knotted

Material: 100% New Zealand wool

Dimensions: Standard sizes available online, with fully custom sizes on request

Pile Height: 0.5"

Origin: Handmade in Bhadohi, India — a region renowned for fine carpet weaving

New Zealand wool is naturally stain-resistant and springs back underfoot — footprints and furniture marks lift rather than settling in. It also takes dye deeply, which is what gives the colors their depth. Some initial shedding is normal and settles within the first few weeks. Why New Zealand wool →

Care: Shedding is normal and will lessen with use. Vacuum regularly on a high-pile setting. Clip loose ends with scissors (do not pull). Rotate periodically for even wear. Blot spills immediately with a clean, white cloth (do not rub). Professional cleaning recommended.

See our rug care guide for more tips.

Sizing a Plaid Runner Rug for Long Spaces

A plaid runner rug earns its keep in the parts of a home that see the most passage. Boxstep works in this shape because its grid steps evenly down the length, so a long, narrow strip stays patterned and purposeful rather than blank. To size one well, measure the run of floor and subtract a few inches at each end so the runner reads as deliberate, and keep an even reveal of bare floor along both sides so it sits centered in the space. The format suits entry halls, landings, and kitchen galleys, where the grid's regularity makes the space feel ordered and intentional. In a longer hallway, a single continuous runner reads cleaner than two shorter mats laid end to end, and the repeating squares let you choose almost any length without breaking the pattern. The chocolate brown and cream tones wear gracefully in heavy-traffic zones, masking the scuffs a well-used corridor collects. Hand-knotting is the reason the fine lines survive that traffic: each knot is tied by hand, holding the double-line grid crisp, over a firm low pile.
