How Suzanne’s Custom Rug Came to Life

Suzanne came to us with a clear sense of her space and color story. She loved one of our existing designs but wanted to see it in a new palette that echoed her bedroom, with soft purples, greens, orange, and gold. What followed was a process of testing, refining, and re-scaling the design until everything felt in balance.

Customizing the Color Palette

Our Violet Axis Rug was the base inspiration

Suzanne had her eye on one of our color blocked rugs but wanted to customize the tones to match her vibrant bedroom wallpaper. Together, we explored shades of purples, greens, oranges, and golds that aligned with the fabric swatches she had chosen.

Color matching is often the most detailed part of creating a custom rug, as even small shifts in tone can change how the rug feels in a space.

Testing Wool Colors in the Space

To make sure the tones worked as imagined, we created a 2×3 sample for Suzanne to review in person. Most colors landed perfectly, but once in the room, the orange appeared brighter than she wanted. Seeing the sample in person helped confirm that a deeper rust tone would blend more naturally with the surrounding textiles and finishes.

This stage is one of the reasons we encourage clients to request samples. Even the most accurate digital mockup can’t replicate how a color interacts with light and texture in a real space.

Reimagining the Design

After living with the sample for a bit, Suzanne realized she wanted the rust to take on a smaller role overall. The greens and purples brought the calm, grounded feel she was after, while the rust served best as an accent. She found another of our designs — a variation of the Temple Steps rug — that captured that balance perfectly.

From there, we customized the color layout, carving depth, and orientation to align with her bedroom’s layout. Each detail, from proportion and pile height to carving, was refined to feel intentional in the space.

The final rug was hand tufted in New Zealand wool and made in a custom size to fit her space perfectly. Subtle carving and refined color transitions highlight the geometry of the design and connect it naturally to the surrounding materials.

All of our rugs are made to order, and every detail — from color and shape to size and technique — can be customized. Explore our full range of custom wool rugs or visit our Handmade Rugs page to learn how we bring each project to life.

Why Custom Rugs Matter

A custom rug is more than a decorative piece — it’s a way to translate color, form, and texture into something personal. By combining Jubi’s modern design language with traditional handcraft, each rug becomes a functional artwork tailored to its environment.

If you’re considering a custom rug for your home or design project, our team can help refine colors, techniques, and dimensions to create something entirely your own. Get in touch with us to start your design process.
