A mid century modern runner like Kinetics II works hardest in the spaces a wider rug cannot reach. In a hallway, leave a few inches of floor on each side so the runner sits centered and the grid pattern stays balanced wall to wall. Down a galley kitchen, choose a length that stops short of the cabinet toe-kicks at either end rather than running fully into them. At the foot of a bed or along a landing, let the band echo the line of the room so the marching squares lead the eye through rather than cutting across it.
Hand-tufting suits a runner built on repetition. Artisans set New Zealand wool through a stretched foundation by hand, then carve and shear the surface so the blocks sit at slightly varied heights and catch the light in sequence down the length of the piece. That carved relief gives a long, narrow rug texture and depth a flatweave cannot.
