A runner asks more of its pattern than a wide rug does, because the eye travels its full length in one pass. Block answers that with a measured grid: the alternation of ribbed and plain squares gives a long corridor a steady cadence, marking the walk without ever feeling repetitive. In a terracotta palette, the warm blocks bring color to the narrowest, often coldest part of a home, an entry or a galley kitchen, where a plain runner would only fill space.
Hand-tufting is what lets the ribbing read. Working from the back of a stretched canvas, artisans set New Zealand wool through the foundation by hand, then shear and carve the surface so the lined panels stand just proud of the plain ones. That low relief is hard to achieve in a flatweave, which is why the technique suits a design built on texture contrast.
