This mauve shag rug holds a dusty purple with a lot of grey in it, closer to dried lavender than to lilac, which keeps it grounded rather than sweet. The pile carries the color through more than one value: light on the tips lifts it toward a soft rose-grey, while the shadow between the strands pushes the same dye toward plum, so the field shifts as you cross the room. Fringe can be added at each end or left off. Designed in New York and hand-knotted in Bhadohi, India, it is made from 100% New Zealand wool with a deep 1.5 inch pile that stays soft and full underfoot. Made to order in any size, so the color can ground a bedroom or sit under a single chair. Each rug is ready in 5 to 6 weeks and ships free worldwide, duties included.

Care: Shedding is normal and will lessen with use. Vacuum regularly on a high-pile setting. Clip loose ends with scissors (do not pull). Rotate periodically for even wear. Blot spills immediately with a clean, white cloth (do not rub). Professional cleaning recommended.

Styling a Muted Purple Rug

Purple has a reputation problem on floors, and it comes from saturation. A clear violet is difficult to live with; a greyed, dusty mauve is not, because it behaves more like a warm neutral with a color cast than like a purple. From across a room it reads closer to taupe with a flush in it, and only resolves into purple up close.

That makes it easier to place than people expect. It sits well with cream, camel and pale oak, sharpens against charcoal and black, and does something quite good with olive and sage, where the green and the purple deepen each other. In a bedroom it is warm without being pink.

The long pile is what gives the color its range, and it comes from the making: each knot is tied by hand in Bhadohi and the wool is left long rather than sheared close.
