This taupe shag rug sits exactly between warm and cool, a grey-brown that takes its cue from whatever surrounds it, reading browner beside wood and greyer beside stone. The long pile is what gives a neutral this quiet something to do: the wool holds shadow between the strands, so the field moves through several values of the same tone as light crosses the room. Pale natural fringe at each end keeps the edge crisp. Designed in New York and hand-knotted in Bhadohi, India, it is made from 100% New Zealand wool with a deep 1.5 inch pile that feels dense and soft underfoot. Made to order in any size, so the tone can run under a full seating group or sit beside a bed. Each rug is ready in 5 to 6 weeks and ships free worldwide, duties included.

Construction: Hand-knotted shag

Material: 100% New Zealand wool

Dimensions: Standard sizes available online, with fully custom sizes on request

Pile Height: 1"

Origin: Handmade in Bhadohi, India — a region renowned for fine carpet weaving

New Zealand wool is naturally stain-resistant and springs back underfoot — footprints and furniture marks lift rather than settling in. It also takes dye deeply, which is what gives the colors their depth. Some initial shedding is normal and settles within the first few weeks. Why New Zealand wool →

Care: Shedding is normal and will lessen with use. Vacuum regularly on a high-pile setting. Clip loose ends with scissors (do not pull). Rotate periodically for even wear. Blot spills immediately with a clean, white cloth (do not rub). Professional cleaning recommended.

See our rug care guide for more tips.

Shipping: Knotted shag rugs are handmade to order and typically ship within 5–6 weeks. Once dispatched, delivery takes 3–5 business days via DHL Express. We offer complimentary worldwide shipping on all rugs.

Returns: Rugs may be returned within 15 days of delivery with a 15% restocking fee. Custom rugs are final sale, except in cases of shipping damage. See our return policy for full details.

Our Picks for You

Building a Room on a Taupe Foundation

Taupe is the most adaptable of the neutrals because it refuses to commit. It carries enough brown to feel warm beside oak, leather and rattan, and enough grey to hold its own against concrete, steel and cool white walls. That makes it the safest starting point when the rest of a room is still undecided, and the least likely to look dated once it is finished.

On a shag, that adaptability gains depth. The pile is long enough that the surface shows several values of the tone at once, so the floor has something to look at up close while still reading as one calm field from across the room. It hides everyday marks better than a pale neutral and shows less lint than a dark one.

Each rug is knotted by hand in Bhadohi around a cotton foundation, with the pile left long and dense so it stands rather than lies.
