This umber shag rug sits in the middle of the brown range, a warm red-brown that reads as fired earth rather than as coffee. The long pile carries it through more than one value: the tips lift toward a golden russet where light lands on them, and the wool between drops into a deeper, redder brown, so the surface reads as grain rather than as a flat tone. Fringe at the ends is optional. Designed in New York and hand-knotted in Bhadohi, India, it is made from 100% New Zealand wool with a deep 1.5 inch pile that stays soft and dense underfoot. Made to order in any size, so the color can run under a full seating group or warm a smaller floor. Each rug is ready in 5 to 6 weeks and ships free worldwide, duties included.

Construction: Hand-knotted shag

Material: 100% New Zealand wool

Dimensions: Standard sizes available online, with fully custom sizes on request

Pile Height: 1"

Origin: Handmade in Bhadohi, India — a region renowned for fine carpet weaving

New Zealand wool is naturally stain-resistant and springs back underfoot — footprints and furniture marks lift rather than settling in. It also takes dye deeply, which is what gives the colors their depth. Some initial shedding is normal and settles within the first few weeks. Why New Zealand wool →

Care: Shedding is normal and will lessen with use. Vacuum regularly on a high-pile setting. Clip loose ends with scissors (do not pull). Rotate periodically for even wear. Blot spills immediately with a clean, white cloth (do not rub). Professional cleaning recommended.

See our rug care guide for more tips.

Shipping: Knotted shag rugs are handmade to order and typically ship within 5–6 weeks. Once dispatched, delivery takes 3–5 business days via DHL Express. We offer complimentary worldwide shipping on all rugs.

Returns: Rugs may be returned within 15 days of delivery with a 15% restocking fee. Custom rugs are final sale, except in cases of shipping damage. See our return policy for full details.

Our Picks for You

Where a Mid-Tone Brown Sits in a Room

A mid-tone brown is the most useful point on the brown range and the least discussed. It is dark enough to ground a room and light enough that it does not read as a shadow, which means it can cover a large floor in a space that has no light to spare.

Umber leans warm and slightly red, an earth color rather than a cool or ashy one. That gives it an easy relationship with the timber already in most rooms, deepening oak and picking up walnut, and it keeps company well with cream, olive, brass and dark green. In a room built on neutrals it supplies warmth without introducing a color that has to be matched.

Every knot is tied by hand in Bhadohi around a cotton foundation, and the wool is left long rather than sheared close, which is what gives a single color this much range from tip to base. See more in our Shag Rugs and Brown Rugs collections, or browse the Solid Color Rugs range. Every Jubi rug is made to order, so this umber can be woven to the exact size your room needs.
