This navy shag rug is a single deep color worked at a long pile, so the surface never sits flat. The strands lean and separate as they catch light, throwing shadow between themselves, which is why the navy reads midnight in some passages and closer to ink in others with no pattern doing the work. Natural ivory fringe finishes each end, left from the warp the rug is knotted on, and gives the dark field a clean edge to stop against. Designed in New York and hand-knotted in Bhadohi, India, it is made from 100% New Zealand wool with a deep 1.5 inch pile you sink into rather than stand on. Made to order in any size, so the color can run under a bed, under a full seating group, or into a small accent corner. Each rug is ready in 5 to 6 weeks and ships free worldwide, duties included.

Construction: Hand-knotted shag

Material: 100% New Zealand wool

Dimensions: Standard sizes available online, with fully custom sizes on request

Pile Height: 1"

Origin: Handmade in Bhadohi, India — a region renowned for fine carpet weaving

New Zealand wool is naturally stain-resistant and springs back underfoot — footprints and furniture marks lift rather than settling in. It also takes dye deeply, which is what gives the colors their depth. Some initial shedding is normal and settles within the first few weeks. Why New Zealand wool →

Care: Shedding is normal and will lessen with use. Vacuum regularly on a high-pile setting. Clip loose ends with scissors (do not pull). Rotate periodically for even wear. Blot spills immediately with a clean, white cloth (do not rub). Professional cleaning recommended.

See our rug care guide for more tips.

Our Picks for You

What a Deep Pile Does to a Dark Color

A dark rug goes one of two ways: flat and heavy, or deep and atmospheric. Pile height decides which. On a short pile, navy sits on the floor as a single block of color. On a shag like this one, the wool is long enough that every strand catches light along its length and casts shadow onto the strands beside it, so the same dye reads as a range rather than one value. That is what keeps a dark floor from reading as a hole in the room, and it is why a navy shag pairs as easily with pale oak and cream as it does with deeper, moodier palettes.

Hand-knotting is what makes the depth possible. Each knot is tied by hand around the foundation in Bhadohi, then the pile is left long, which takes more wool and more time than a shorter weave. That density is also what lets a shag this deep stand up instead of matting down, and the fringe at each end is the warp itself, finished rather than added.
