Will my rug look exactly like the photos?
Every rug is handmade, so slight variations in color and texture are natural. Screen settings can also affect how colors appear. Order a sample to see the color and feel the wool in your space.
A dark rug goes one of two ways: flat and heavy, or deep and atmospheric. Pile height decides which. On a short pile, navy sits on the floor as a single block of color. On a shag like this one, the wool is long enough that every strand catches light along its length and casts shadow onto the strands beside it, so the same dye reads as a range rather than one value. That is what keeps a dark floor from reading as a hole in the room, and it is why a navy shag pairs as easily with pale oak and cream as it does with deeper, moodier palettes.
Hand-knotting is what makes the depth possible. Each knot is tied by hand around the foundation in Bhadohi, then the pile is left long, which takes more wool and more time than a shorter weave. That density is also what lets a shag this deep stand up instead of matting down, and the fringe at each end is the warp itself, finished rather than added.
